Helen Elaine Steiner Rice (May 19, 1900 - Apr 23, 1981) was an American poet who wrote religious and inspirational verse.[ane]

Life [ ]

She was born Helen Steiner in Lorain, Ohio on May xix, 1900. Her father, a railroad worker, died in the flu epidemic of 1918.

She began work for a public utility and progressed to the position of advertising managing director, which was rare for a adult female at that time. She also became the Ohio Land Chairman of the Women'due south Public Information Committee of the Electrical Light Association, and campaigned for women'due south rights and improved working conditions.[ii]

In 1929 she married Franklin Dryden Rice, a depository financial institution vice-president in Dayton, Ohio. Subsequently the stock market crash in October that year, Franklin lost his job and his investments. He barbarous into a depression from which he never recovered, and committed suicide in 1932.[2] [3]

Rice became a successful businesswoman and lecturer, merely institute her most satisfying outlet in writing verse for the greeting card company Gibson Greetings. Her poems received broad exposure in the 1960s when several were read by Aladdin on the verse segment of the Lawrence Welk television prove.

The need for her poems became so corking that her books are still selling steadily subsequently many printings, and she has been acclaimed as "America's love inspirational poet laureate".[3] [4]

She died on April 23, 1981, less than a month earlier her 81st birthday. She is buried in Elmwood Cemetery in Lorain.[1]

Rice'southward books of inspirational verse take sold nearly 7,000,000 copies. Her potent religious religion and the ability she had to limited deep emotion gave her poems timeless appeal.[5]

Recognition [ ]

In a individual ceremony on March xiv, 1981, Rice was awarded an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters by Mt. St. Joseph Higher.[6]

Before her decease she established the Helen Steiner Rice Foundation, to award grants to worthy charitable programs that assist the needy and the elderly. The Foundation continues today, under the auspices of the Cleveland Museum Center. In addition to its charitable work, the Foundation hosts a Helen Steiner Rice website.[7]

In 2002 an Ohio Historical Marking honoring Rice was installed in Lakeview Park in Lorain.[6]

Helen Steiner Rice Elementary School was opened in Lorain on Oct fourteen, 2007.[6]
